As I wasn't able to reliably provide a way to comment on the site that would not fall prey to spam attacks (bringing the machine on which this blog is hosted to its knees), I have to close comments. Only allowing registered comments does not help: spammers directly try to use the comment cgi script, which gets stuck waiting for authentication. As they call many instances of the script at the same time, the server runs out of resources. I tried obfuscating the name of the script, I tried detecting that an attack is occurring and temporarily disable comments, but neither worked.
